Residential Wellbeing

If you choose to live in university halls, you’ll have the support of our friendly Residential Wellbeing team.

Living in halls may be the first time you’ve lived away from home, which can feel exciting, daunting or a bit of both, so we want you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. It’s about more than just having a place to stay – it’s about feeling part of a community, settling in with confidence and knowing there’s support around you whenever you need it.

During my first year I lived in university halls. It was a great way of meeting people – living on campus made moving so far away from home less daunting. The staff were lovely and quick to fix any issues, and put on different events throughout the year to support our wellbeing.

Support when you need it

Our Residential Wellbeing team is here to support you, creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment and helping you settle into your accommodation.

Made up of trained staff (Staff Residential Advisers) and student mentors (Student Residential Advisers or SRAs), the team provides wellbeing support alongside community-building and social events.

They can help with issues like homesickness, flatmate problems, mental health concerns, safety worries or anything else that feels overwhelming for you – it doesn’t matter how big or small the problem.

Your wellbeing is important to us, so we’re available 24/7/365. There’s always a member of the team on call, including weekends, public holidays, Christmas and New Year, with out of hours support provided by SRAs, Staff Residential Advisers or security throughout the night.

When I first moved to uni, I moved into halls of residence and didn’t know anyone in the city, but I found it really easy to make connections with my flat and course mates over a cuppa in the kitchen. I met a lot of other friends through attending the events put on by my SRA, such as pottery painting and jewellery-making nights.

Making friends in halls

Each flat in halls has a communal kitchen where you can hang out, make meals together or have a coffee and chat. There are common rooms too – great spaces for socialising and relaxation, with some offering free tea and coffee, pool tables, TV and foosball tables.

To help you make the most of your halls experience and feel part of the student community, the SRAs run loads of events and activities. These are a great way to meet people, learn new skills, get new experiences, chat to the team or just have a break from studying.

You’ll have plenty of chances to mingle and make friends – in the first term alone, there were around 60 social events across our halls in 2025! Come with friends or rock up solo – you’re sure find some friendly faces. Our events have included things like:

  • wellbeing socials
  • mocktail nights
  • board games and drinks evenings
  • crafting sessions
  • Chinese New Year celebrations
  • make your own smoothie socials
  • quiz nights
  • wind-down movie nights
  • Valentine’s cupcake decorating and card making.

I started out living in halls, which made it super easy to settle in and meet new people. There was always something going on – shared dinners, games nights, random chats in the kitchen. It helped me build friendships fast and some of my closest friends used to be my flatmates.

Carlton, Sport Coaching BSc(Hons)

Student Residential Advisers

It’s often easier to talk to another student rather than a member of staff, so each flat is assigned a Student Residential Adviser (SRA) – a senior student who lives and works in the halls.

Our SRAs have been through the same things as you – moving to a new city, feeling anxious about starting university, figuring out buses, laundry and day-to-day life.

You can find out more about SRAs by watching our .

Buddy Scheme

If you are finding it hard to meet people or feeling a bit overwhelmed, our Buddy Scheme is here to help. We will pair you with a Student Residential Adviser who’ll check in with you regularly, invite you to events in halls, grab coffee with you and just be a familiar face when everything feels new. They can give also you handy tips and guidance on everyday uni and halls life, because they’ve been in your shoes.

The great thing about the SRA team is that since we are all students studying a wide range of subjects and from different backgrounds, you will be able to find someone you can relate to.

Anjola Oladipo, Student Residential Adviser

Staff Residential Advisers

Our Residential Wellbeing Team also has trained Staff Residential Advisers who live and work on site to support you.

They can offer you advice and guidance and can react to more serious incidents. They will listen to your concerns, talk through your options and may direct you to services across the university as well as the local support.
