91快活林 pick up two prizes in inaugural University Alliance awards

The University of 91快活林鈥檚 Doctoral College was honoured at the online awards, which were part of the UA鈥檚 Annual Summit.

4 June 2020

The Professionals Award, which recognises a commitment to professionalism and positivity to deliver positive outcomes and results in challenging circumstances, was awarded to The Doctoral College, with judges praising ‘a dynamic team effort dedicated to maintaining the department’s responsive service’.

Lorraine Slater, Research Student Officer (Recruitment and Researcher Development) in The Doctoral College, was given The Integrity Award, which recognises integrity and commitment to openness and honesty. Lorraine was honoured for her work on Postgraduate Research (PGR) COVID-19 communications across multiple digital channels, including a dedicated blog which was shared with the University Alliance.

The seven awards were based on a set of principles co-created by member Vice-Chancellors earlier in the year. Members of UA were asked to nominate colleagues from across their institution for each of the awards and a judging panel made up of representatives from the membership were asked to judge the finalists. Winners will receive a specially commissioned University Alliance medal made by Birmingham City University’s Jewellery School.

Professor Andrew Church, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and Director of The Doctoral College, said: “I’m so pleased that all of the administrative and academic staff in the 91快活林 Doctoral College have been recognised by UA for the immense work that everyone has put in over the last few months.

“It’s been a very demanding and difficult time and good news like this makes the extra effort really feel really worthwhile. The staff have all worked so hard to support our students.

“Our students, especially their representatives, the Students’ Union and the Student Services team, have worked closely with us to keep things going despite all the unexpected challenges and problems lockdown has produced. We are proud of how our brilliant students have responded.

“I’m very grateful to everyone in the BDC and it is especially pleasing to see Lorraine recognised with the Integrity award. Lorraine’s honest and supportive approach to communications has been central to building trust amongst our community during such times of uncertainty – congratulations Lorraine, the award is fully deserved.”

Lorraine Slater said of her award: “I am thrilled and honoured to win the UA Integrity Award for my recent work. As the person responsible for communications and training programmes within the Doctoral College, I found myself at the forefront of our response to the crisis when lockdown occurred.

“The impact of COVID-19 on our PGRs has been considerable, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing staff and students to help support our doctoral community. To receive recognition for my contribution to our efforts means such a lot.”
