Queer Futures 2

Established December 2024

Queer Futures 2 is a large national UK study to identify and evaluate early intervention mental health support and services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning+ (LGBTQ+) young people. Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the research project is being run by the Universities of 91快活林, Lancaster, Leeds and Manchester in close collaboration with LGBTQ+ young people and an advisory group from the health, education and voluntary sectors. The study is led by Professor Elizabeth McDermott at Lancaster University and will produce NHS commissioning guidance.

LGBTQ+ young people are more likely to suffer from depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and poor mental health than heterosexual or cis young people.

In the largest UK research study conducted so far, young people who were LGBT and under 35 years old were two times more likely to have poor mental health compared to heterosexual young people. Despite having more mental health problems, LGBT young people are reluctant to seek help from mental health services, and when they do, they often find them unhelpful.

There is very little research on LGBTQ+ young people and mental health services and, as a result, their mental health support needs are not fully understood.

Project aims

The aim of this study is to produce research that will improve the provision of mental health early intervention services and self-care support to LGBTQ+ young people.

The research study has three stages. First, the international research on mental health services for LGBTQ+ young people will be examined to understand what type of services seem to work best for LGBTQ+ young people and will improve their mental health.

Second, early intervention mental health services across the UK that have been developed for LGBTQ+ young people will be identified. These services are not just clinical services such as CAMHS but will also include education based provision, youth service support, peer support services and online services.

Thirdly, twelve of the services we have found will be chosen, and LGBTQ+ young people, their family/carers and staff from these services will be asked about what works and what does not in improving LGBTQ+ young people’s mental health, and how mental health services can be improved.

Project findings and impact

Our project aims to produce research that will improve the provision of mental health support for LGBTQ+ young people when they first start experiencing mental health problems. We will also produce guidance for the NHS so they can develop mental health services that LGBTQ+ young people feel safe to use and that meet their needs.

Findings and impact will be updated in due course.
